XC Molini di Triora

Hiking or biking through the Ligurian hinterland is really fantastic; it allows you to discover hidden corners, suggestive, far from the chaotic beaches or the busier communication routes.

One of the areas that is really worth exploring by bike is the one around Molini di Triora. This is the starting point for a beautiful XC trail of about 30 km, for those who want to go full bore and train, as well as for those of you who just want to go on a relaxing ride and discover the territory. I went for the second option and I'll tell you what I came across on my tour.
The track starts from the main square of the exquisite village of Molini di Triora heading towards Triora. The first bit is on a sealed road, which then turns into an unmade trail taking us through the hamlet of Vignago. This is the start of an initial stretch of a great single track leading to the tidy township of Goina with its stone houses. A descent on a dirt road takes us to Triora; it's really worth taking a break here to have a look around this mediaeval village known as the “township of witches”. Still, in the past Triora also used to be known as “the granary of the Republic of Genoa” and even now you can get some excellent locally made bread, which we recommend you try! With this peace and quiet it's hard to get back onto the bikes, but we're also curious about what we'll find along this long trail. We get back on our bikes and head along a sealed road for while, then we're back on an unmade track that takes us to the trail towards Creppo. From Bregalla - which used to be full of grazing animals, wheat and vineyards - we take a downhill trail first along an old mule track, then on a sealed road to Loreto, where its few houses perch on the sheer rock face. The rocks of Loreto are known to the free climbing community, and the 112 m high bridge is often used for bungee jumping over the deep gorge at the bottom where the Argentina river flows. If you decide not to keep climbing, cross the bridge and you'll quickly pick up the trail leading back to Molini. But if you've still got the desire to cool off, you can always take a detour to the enchanting lake Degno and take a nice regenerating dive at a height of 10 m! A small hidden paradise...within easy reach of mountain bikers!
