Casa del Romano - Monte Antola: the flowered trail

The narcissuses bloom in May: a white and fragrant enchantment

There are many different trails leading to Monte Antola, for time immemorial considered “the mountain of the Genoese”. The easiest track leads from Casa del Romano because it starts already at 1390 metres above sea level, on the watershed between Trebbia and Borbera. You gradually climb along meadows and beech woods, sometimes on the Val Borbera side, others on the side facing the Val Trebbia.
A pathway made magical in spring and summer by the flowering narcissuses, globeflowers, gentians and arnica - the medicinal plant with a strong perfume and yellow-orange flowers - and by the multicoloured wings of the fluttering butterflies, and in winter you can cross the pure white snow-covered trail on snowshoes or cross-country skis.

When you get to a small saddle at about 1500 m, you can take a short break. Then there is another gentle climb that takes you to the southern side of the Monte delle Tre Croci (1560 m). Descend from here to the Passo delle Tre Croci where three crosses commemorate the three wayfarers who were overcome by a snowstorm. The flat track continues along a grassy saddle. From here you climb up to the peak. After a two-hour hike you'll reach the top, surmounted by the large white cross and on a clear day your efforts will be rewarded with stunning views right over to Corsica and to the highest peaks of the Alps.
Don't forget to relax and take a break at the Parco Antola refuge, located along the southern slopes of the mountain, which offers friendly, comfortable hospitality. If you like, you can tuck into a delicious dish of polenta and sleep the night so you can enjoy the magical enchantment of dawn.

It's an easy hike so you don't need to concentrate all the time, which leaves your mind free to really enjoy the views and nature's offerings - to be transfixed by the expanse of narcissuses and drink in their fragrance or stop and admire the flight of a buzzard, losing all sense of time and making the most of a silence interrupted only by the swishing of plants and by mysterious animal noises. A fallow dear, a roe deer, a wild boar, a fox or...a wolf?
